Occupy Nanaimo: Day 2 – Urgently Needed

A number of hardy souls spent a very cold night last night at the Diana Krall Plaza in downtown Nanaimo to ‘hold the fort’ on the occupation, which began yesterday with a rally of more than 300 strong. A few photos from yesterday’s Occupy Nanaimo event are here.

Six tents are pitched on the Occupy Nanaimo site right now, plus the ‘Zombie HQ’ canopy and the Food/Clothes/Supplies canopy.

A General Assembly Meeting for Occupy Nanaimo will be held today at 3:00 pm, on site. All supporters welcome.

The following items are urgently needed. If you can help in any way, please go down and do so.

Needed for the Occupation:

1. Healthy fruit juice. They have nothing to drink but water and coffee.

2. Food that does NOT have to be cooked or heated. A big pot of cooked oatmeal would be appreciated. Also protein such as eggs. Can be hard-boiled.

This is all they have to cook with.

3. Propane stove with a large propane tank. They only have one tiny little propane tank to heat a pot of water on. They need a real stove (gas bar-b-cue maybe?), and ideally with an infrared deflector so that it is also a heat source for them to gather around at night. It was mighty cold last night!

4. WiFi Connection. They would be streaming live if they had WiFi. They need one of the nearby businesses or residents in the apartments above the businesses on Commercial or Wharf Street to give them access to their Wifi. This could be The Mac Boutique, Mon Petit Chou, or several other places nearby. The library’s WiFi is shielded and so not available. If you know someone who works at one of these businesses or lives above, please ask them if they would support the camp by making their WiFi available to the occupiers.

These are all things that are needed today. Please do what you can. They are there for all of us.

Good job by all in showing solidarity with the occupy protesters worldwide. I was impressed yesterday with the turnout, and more importantly the enthusiasm. This is the best oppurtunity in decades for real change.
