Facebook blocks blogspot(dot)ca

UPDATE–June 7, 2012: The problem now seems to be solved. It is once again possible to post links from blogspot.ca to Facebook.

UPDATE–May 31, 2012: The problem described below extends beyond blogspot.ca. Facebook is also blocking all links from blogspot.co.uk and perhaps other country-specific blogspot domains as well. And, as one commenter below points out, Facebook’s action is retroactive – all past blogspot links from blogspot domains other than blogspot.com have been removed from Facebook, along with all comments posted about them, wiping out years of information and discussion in some cases.

May 28, 2012: For reasons that remain unclear, Facebook has begun blocking all attempts to post links from blogspot.ca, Blogger’s Canadian platform. To post a blogspot.ca link to Facebook you must now manually change the URL from blogspot.ca to blogspot.com, the American counterpart. WTF Facebook?!@#

(Alternatively, if the blogger has installed the “share link” button for Facebook on her blog, the URL will automatically be rewritten to blogspot.com upon posting, and those links will pass unimpeded through the Facebook filtering system.)

I first noticed the problem two days ago on Facebook when a link I had posted the night before to a review of our eco-poetry chapbook anthology Igniting the Green Fuse disappeared from my own profile page and from the pages of several other Facebook users. All attempts to repost it yielded this message:

“Sorry, this post contains a blocked URL The content you’re trying to share includes a link that’s been blocked for being spammy or unsafe: blogspot.ca

For more information, visit the Help Center. If you think you’re seeing this by mistake, please let us know.”

The link in question led back to Jamie Reid’s excellent literary blog Schroedinger’s Cat.

The four of us who authored the chapbook (Catherine Owen, Heidi Greco, Kate Braid, and me, Kim Goldberg) speculated that perhaps the words “igniting” and “fuse” in the book’s title had triggered some Homeland Security algorithm that made Facebook choke.

But no, upon experimentation we discovered that this action is platform-wide. That is to say, ALL links from blogspot.ca are currently being blocked by Facebook.

Who knows why? Is it some perfectly innocent glitch at Facebook? Or is some commercial motive at work to drive people to the American version of the blogs of thousands of Canadian bloggers using blogspot.ca?

Or is this somehow related to Facebook going public with its Initial Public Offering of stock on May 18?

Blogger is owned by Google. And there is intense rivalry between Facebook and Google. Is Facebook’s blockage of blogspot.ca a poke in the eye to its rival Google?

Thank you for researching this Kim. I appreciate your vivid eye and interrogation.

  3. Hello There. I found your blog using msn. This is
an extremely well written article. I’ll be sure to bookmark it and come back to read more of your useful info. Thanks for the post. I’ll certainly comeback.

  4. It is absolutely insane! What is the point to having a FB page for your blog if you can’t share the link unless you “dot com” it? At least there is a way around it but to deem all Canadians as spammers is insane.

  5. Lee Boyce says:

Copy the links from your Feedburner — then post then Facebook will not flag it as spam!

    😀

It’s not just blogspot.ca that’s being blocked as spam…same thing for blogspot.co.uk unfortunately. And the most annoying thing about this is that all my already uploaded images which contained a link to my blog in the describtion, were simply deleted without any kind of warning…..this really makes no sense at all, everything is just gone.:/

It’s worse than just blocking. Facebooks action is retrospective so any link ever made to blogspot.co.uk has vanished from Facebook Profiles and Pages along with any and all comments made on FB about them. In some instances five years of history has gone with no warning, decimating those Facebook pages affected.
