I came away with 3rd prize (and the cash that goes with it) last night at the Wordstorm open-mic competition down at The Vault here in Nanaimo.

My other two prize-winning compatriots are Gabriola performance artist Altogether Lisa, who took 1st prize, and VIU philosophy student Babak Zargarian, who went home with 2nd prize.

Wordstorm is Nanaimo’s premier spoken word and reading series, held on the last Tuesday of each month down at Demeter’s Coffee Vault, 499 Wallace Street. The featured readers for each evening are preceded by an open mic that is run with the typical slam rules – 3 minutes for poetry, judges chosen at random from the audience, cash prizes, etc.

Our featured readers last night were Heidi Greco, Emily McGiffin, and Nora Gould. Wordstorm is now in its 7th year, and was founded by David Fraser and Cindy Shantz.

Next Wordstorm is March 26, 2013, with featured readers: Jocelyn Shipley, Wendy Donowa, David Fraser, and Harvey Jenkins. Event starts at 7:00 pm. Come early to sign up for open mic and grab a bite or beverage. $5
